This is the English version of a book originally published in French by the Société Mathématique de France [Astérisque. 235 (1996; Zbl 0855.57003)]. NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEWe have no appreciated differences between this translation and the original book in French (just the reference of Skora's paper, published after the original book). NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINETo the review of the French original [loc. cit.], we just want to add that this monograph is not only an excellent reference for research in geometry and topology, but a suitable text for students with background in modern techniques in low dimensional topology.
